Speech Language Pathologist

 

JOB DESCRIPTION:  To improve the school educational experiences for students with speech and/or language needs through screening, evaluation, diagnosis, and implementation of services.  Responsible for providing direct or indirect services to effect positive changes in student communication behavior with regards to voice, language, articulation or fluency disorders.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: Arizona Speech-Language Pathologist Certification from the Arizona Department of Education (or temporary license for Clinical Fellow). Arizona Department of Health Services Speech Pathology License. A Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology. Certificate of Clinical Competence issued by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) or Clinical Competency exam passed with Certificate of Clinical Competence pending completion of Clinical Fellowship Year. Current Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Administer and interpret a variety of speech and language assessments designed for determining eligibility for speech and/or language services and for designing programs to meet the specific needs of students. 
  • Prepares paperwork and reports including completing documents within state and federal guidelines and including relevant information (e.g., MET, IEP, progress reports)
  • Provides interventions appropriate to the age and learning needs of the individual student
  • Confers with parents, teachers, administrators, and other professionals to interpret evaluations and recommendations concerning students in an effort to maximize educational development through placement or educational management and to ensure the least restrictive environment for each student. 
  • Gathers and interprets data for individual students
  • Supervises university practicum students, clinical fellows, and speech-language pathology assistants; Mentors new SLPs
  • Maintains all documentation related to Medicaid School-Based Claiming
  • Collaborates with school professionals, families, and students
  • Contributes to the literacy achievement of students. Addresses the linguistic and metalinguistic foundations of the curriculum
  • Serves and assists on various prevention/early intervention team activities (e.g., teacher assistance teams and child study teams). On these teams, the SLP may conduct observations, complete non-diagnostic assessments, plan with teachers, model interventions, coach teachers, and/or gather data, all in the context of general education
  • Motivate students to maximize their learning potential and ensure that all students have successful experiences.Remains current in all aspects of the profession and supports the use of evidence-based practices (EBP). Stays abreast of educational issues. May provide training to other staff members on topics related to speech-language impairments and treatment
  • Shares in the responsibility of reviewing records of incoming students and attending multidisciplinary conferences as required. 
  • Maintain high expectations for all students, with positive and effective classroom management in compliance with school and district guidelines. 
  • Attends staff and in-service meetings, workshops, and school functions, as directed. 
  • Adheres to all Board policies and/or rules, Arizona Revised Statutes, and federal regulations pertaining to education. 
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

SALARY: Nine-month position, speech pathologist’s & occupational therapist’s salary schedule, and employee benefits in accordance with Board policies.


EVALUATION: Performance is to be evaluated in accordance with Board policy on the evaluation of professional personnel.
